Calculation methodology

Simple mathematics. Explicit assumptions.

The Carrowmont Inflation Calculator uses compound inflation to illustrate how prices and purchasing power may change over time.

Applies to the current Carrowmont Inflation Calculator.
Last reviewed: September 2026. This is an educational model, not a forecast of future inflation.

1. Future cost

The calculator compounds the amount you enter using your annual inflation assumption and time horizon.

Future cost = Amount today × (1 + inflation rate)years

2. Purchasing power of the same nominal amount

If the number of currency units stays unchanged while prices rise, its purchasing power falls. The tool estimates today's-equivalent purchasing power by discounting the nominal amount by the same inflation assumption.

Today's-equivalent value = Nominal future amount ÷ (1 + inflation rate)years

3. Scenario comparison

The chart shows three scenarios: two percentage points below your entered rate, your entered rate, and two percentage points above it. The lower rate is never allowed below 0%.

4. Country and currency

Country selection controls locale-aware formatting and a default currency. Users can override the currency. The calculator does not use live foreign-exchange rates and does not convert amounts between currencies.

5. What the tool does not model

  • Country-specific taxes, pensions or benefits.
  • Changes in exchange rates.
  • Changing inflation from year to year.
  • Investment returns.
  • Differences between official inflation measures and a household's personal inflation experience.

6. Interpretation

Inflation is rarely constant in real life. The tool is designed for scenario planning: change the inflation assumption and compare how sensitive the result is to different rates.
