Future spending→Portfolio target→Savings path

The planner keeps the withdrawal-rate assumption visible and editable. It is a modelling input, not a promise of sustainable future withdrawals.

YOUR PLAN

Build the assumptions

1

Lifestyle & independence target

Start with spending in today’s money and the share you expect to continue after reaching financial independence.

How would you like to plan?
2

Portfolio & saving assumptions

These inputs determine how your invested assets may grow before financial independence. Plan Until Age mode also uses the same return assumption after FI.

HOW IT WORKS

Separate the lifestyle target from the investment path.

First, Carrowmont estimates the monthly spending that would need to be funded by the portfolio. In Sustainable FI mode, that annual amount is divided by the withdrawal-rate assumption. In Plan Until Age mode, the calculator instead models the portfolio required to fund inflation-adjusted monthly withdrawals through the selected planning age.

The planner compares that mode-specific target with the projected value of current assets and future recurring investments at the selected investment frequency.

METHODOLOGY

Transparent calculations.

Portfolio-funded monthly spending: Current monthly spending × expected spending percentage − recurring non-portfolio income.

Sustainable FI mode: Annual portfolio-funded spending ÷ planning withdrawal rate creates the FI target in today’s money. The target is then increased with the inflation assumption for future ages.

Plan Until Age mode: The model calculates the portfolio required at each age to fund monthly portfolio-supported spending through the selected Plan Until Age. Spending rises with the inflation assumption; withdrawals are modelled at the start of each month and the remaining balance then earns the monthly rate implied by the expected annual return.

Recurring non-portfolio income: Income entered in today’s money is treated as retaining the same real purchasing power, so only the remaining portfolio-funded spending is modelled.

Portfolio projection: Existing invested assets grow using the periodic rate implied by the annual return and selected investment frequency. Contributions are added once per selected investment period and can increase once each year by the entered step-up rate.

Modelled FI age: The first modelled contribution period when the projected portfolio equals or exceeds the target produced by the selected planning approach. Sustainable FI is checked through age 90; Plan Until Age is checked through the selected planning horizon before the target becomes zero. Timing is displayed in years and months.

Financial Independence Journey: Sustainable FI shows annual accumulation snapshots. Plan Until Age shows accumulation through Target Age and then a distinct drawdown phase through Plan Until Age, with inflation-adjusted portfolio-funded spending, modelled post-FI growth and ending portfolio balance. The underlying calculations continue to use the approved contribution frequency before Target Age and monthly withdrawals after Target Age.

Recurring investment required: The starting contribution at the selected investment frequency that would model to the selected-age target while applying the entered annual step-up. It is solved numerically.

Important: These are deterministic planning illustrations. Sustainable FI mode does not determine whether a withdrawal rate is safe or suitable. Plan Until Age mode uses the same constant expected return before and after FI and does not model sequence-of-returns risk, taxes, fees, asset-allocation changes, irregular spending shocks or future policy changes. Plan Until Age is a planning horizon, not a prediction of lifespan.
